1
Course Programme
Day l.
New surfaces - preparation and use of the cabinet scraper. Abrasives for
wood - the correct way to fold and use abrasive paper. The importance
of raising the grain. Making your own stopping wax. Making your own shellac
polish. Introduction to sealers. Preparing and sealing panels for exercises
on day 2.
Day 2.
Bleaching - controlling and modifying bleaching systems. Bleaching tests.
Five ways to fill the grain. Grain filling tests on panels in preparation
for day 3. Filling minor surface imperfections. Heat resistant surfaces.
Day 3.
Stains and staining (chemical/ water/ oil and spirit). Staining tests
on panels in preparation for day 4. Preparation, care and use of brushes.
Making your own polishing wax. Simulating patination, age and wear.
Day 4.
Shellac polishes. Making a polish rubber and fad. French polishing technique.
Colouring techniques using spirit or water based opaque and transparent
mediums. Designing and developing your own finishing systems. Developing
clear and opaque wax coatings on panels in preparation for day 5.
Day 5. Wax finishing. Shellac polishing without oil. Water and oil based
wax finishes. Individual project work on panels.
ARRIVAL: On day 1, the workshops will open at 08.30 for a 09.00 start
WORKSHOPS: The workshop will be available to you from 8.00 a.m.- 8.00
p.m. Lectures are from 9.00 a.m. - 5.30 p.m. (with breaks for coffee,
lunch and tea).
COURSE FINISHES ON DAY 5 AT 4.30 p.m.
