General Course Content
This second part of the traditional hand finishing course is for students
who have developed some finishing skills after completing part one and
intend to work as restorers/ conservators or have furniture with finishes
that need attention. Please ensure that you have made time to practice
the techniques shown in part one before attending this more advanced course.
Suitable projects to bring
Four examples of modern or period furniture with any of
the following problems: Spirit, ink, heat or water damage; perished or
flaking polish; colours that need matching or changing; surfaces to clean
and re-wax; repairs to hide; surfaces to strip and re-finish with either
traditional or heat resistant coatings. Your projects will be used to
illustrate the cleaning, colouring and finishing lectures/ demonstrations.
Students expecting to complete a re-finishing/ finishing project in five
days will be disappointed due to drying times and the fact that a lot
of the course is taken up with lectures and demonstrations.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PROVISION ON THIS COURSE FOR FURNTIURE REPAIR.
PLEASE ENSURE THAT ALL REPAIRS ARE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THE COURSE. ITEMS
MUST BE STRUCTURALLY SOUND WITH NO MISSING OR BROKEN PARTS, DAMAGED OR
LIFTING VENEERS.
After registration, please contact the school to discuss the projects
you intend to bring. Students arriving by public transport are not expected
to bring large items these will be provided by the school.
