Veneering
Hammer, Press, Vacuum and Caul

Duration: 3 Days
Location: Little Surrenden Workshops

General Course Content
This course has been programmed to compliment the cabinet making courses currently offered by Bruce Luckhurst at The Little Surrenden Workshops and has been designed to appeal to both cabinet makers and restorers.

During this course, students will prepare and veneer a panel with halved and quartered veneers. Cross-band the quartered side and inlay a string line. Prepare and sharpen a cabinet scraper.

In addition, the following techniques will be demonstrated:

  • Laying curls and burrs
  • Veneering shaped work
  • Laying marquetry
  • Restoring missing and loose veneers
  • Removing and re-laying veneers
  • Hot and cold pressing
  • Vacuum pressing
  • Cutting your own veneers from solid timber
  • Making your own string line

Part three, hand made furniture students who have completed the carcase of model number 10, 11 or 12 will have time to veneer their cabinets during the course.

Students who have completed cabinet making parts one and two and wish to restore antique furniture are welcome to bring projects with veneer damage to this course. Projects with structural damage, missing mouldings or components, worn or broken drawers are NOT accommodated by this syllabus and are best suited to my cabinet making part three - furniture restoration course. If you have any other veneering project for which you would like advice, please bring it with you.

Completion of cabinet making parts one and two is not a prerequisite for this course.
